Alignment Between Learning, Working, and Leading Dtermines Individual and Systems Success
Presenter: Dr. Alan J. Peterson, CEO, AJP & Associates, LLC, West Fargo, ND, USA
Keywords: Performance, Alignment, Systems
Individual and systems success are determined by how well learning, working and leading are aligned. This is especially critical for education systems but applies to all management systems. Aligned in this application means that critical system dynamics are compatible, are recognized and are mutually supportive. And to the degree possible, performance expectations are inherent. The critical system dynamics include, Structure, Self-recognition, Measurement, Information Transformation, Governance, Participation, Communication, Purpose. By contrast a typical education system (and many systems in many business sectors) can be defined by the following description: Hierarchical, Job Definitions, Assumed Dynamics, Failure to Learn, Failure to Improve. The critical system dynamics provided in a cause and effect sequence with brief insights for each. Purpose: What is a noble purpose? And why is it necessary? Structure: Processes and the role of “completeness”.
Governance: The role of ownership and the role of stewardship.
Participation: Expectations of all members of the system. Information Transformation: The goal for all efforts and the reason for human participation. Learning. Measurement: What are the facts? Can the system prevent failure? Self-recognition: Is the system; are the players and processes, consistently and constantly aware of themselves and their importance in producing the system’s product or service? Communication: The glue that holds a system together. Common language, common approaches to problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, commitment.
Alignment: Definition, Explanation of three elements – Compatible, Recognized, Supportive, plus Performance and Inherency. Brief summary of my implementation experience as director of North Dakota Center for Distance Education (NDCDE) a K-12 statewide online school. I took on the director position after 20 years of working in quality management in the automotive, aerospace and appliance industry sectors. Bonus section: A STEM Lab constructed by NDCDE to support project-based learning produced superior learning results while at the same time molding young students and/or adults into productive systems participants. With a design that merges the best in brain science research and the best in systems dynamics, NDCDE’s STEM Lab produces individuals who are choice ready. They know how to learn, they know how to work with others, and they know what they want to do.
