ABSTRACT

One of my favorite things to do in my job is to train auditors. I believe that auditors are the conscience of the quality management system. There are a lot of auditors out there that audit only the requirement, and although auditing the requirement is important to ensure we are in conformance with the standard, I believe it is important for auditors to understand the purpose of the requirement and how it fits in the big picture. Many times, when I review audit reports, I see nonconformities with no value added; sure! A document missing a revision is an issue, but when I ask the auditors the reason for this being an issue, I often hear that because the procedure ask that documents have a revision, and is in these instances when I like to tell them to explain to me what are the risks of not controlling that specific document; what would happen if someone has the same document with a different version without knowing it? When auditors actually understand if the gap found is relevant or not, that is when internal audits are relevant. Some organizations just perform internal audits to check the box, and on those cases I can only say they are wasting their time. Auditors that understand the seven principles, PDCA and the process approach are more efficient and effective at their jobs. They are not only auditing a requirement, they are auditing a management system as a whole, not only a piece, they can find the linkages between the requirements and the seven principles, the relevance of the conformities or nonconformities based on results, verify that the PDCA cycle is being implemented, and that their organizations work as a team instead of silos. Auditors are instrumental in the effective implementation of a quality management system and that is why we need to pay more attention on how we train our auditors, so they can add value and contribute to the success of the organization
