Auditor Tool Box-Process Interaction Diagram

Presenter:   Steve Michael Baysinger, Director of Logistics, BayMerica, LLC, Spring Branch, TX, USA

Keywords: Process, Interaction, Clause 4.4

Industry: Manufacturing

ABSTRACT

Clause 4.4.1 of the ISO 9001:2015 Standard states what the client must do to identify the core processes within the organization and, more importantly, the interaction between those processes. Experience has shown, however, that clients don’t always understand inter-relationships between processes nor do clients comprehend the basics of process interaction diagrams: input, activities (to include the fixed variables that affect process activities: resources; expertise; risks and opportunities; measures of effectiveness) and output. Steve Baysinger has developed a one-page process interaction diagram tool that has proven itself ideal for recording all the basic elements of the client’s process interactions and supporting information. Similar to a “turtle diagram,” this process interaction tool allows the auditor to capture:

• INPUTS: feeding into the process

• ACTIVITIES: the core process activity under evaluation with supporting sub-process activities directly influenced by o RESOURCES: required to support the process activities being assessed; o EXPERTISE: skill sets, training and experience required to support process activities; o RISKS and OPPORTUNITIES: risk identification; methods of risk management; o MEASURES OF EFFECTIVENESS: target goals and objectives versus actuals, Quality first pass yields, on-time delivery, price versus cost, overall quality management system effectiveness, customer satisfaction (internal and/or external), etc.

• OUTPUTS: feeding into the next process (or to the customer in the form of a product or service) Due to the success of the auditor process interaction tool with ISO 9001 client’s, Baysinger feels the need to share this tool for all to use or adapt to their own auditing needs or requirements.
