Dr. Barbara Hurley

Barbara Hurley is a Senior Research Engineer in the Quality Assurance (QA) Group for the Electronic Systems (ELSYS) Laboratory at Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). As a member of ELSYS QA, she conducts internal ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) audits and assists with planning, support, and follow-up activities related to internal auditing to ensure ELSYS retains their ISO certification. In addition to auditing in ELSYS, Barbara is also the QA resource on a GTRI team responsible for a large, multi-year sponsored research and development project. She provides guidance and oversight of project quality processes which has included tasks related to process development, auditing and peer reviews, witness testing, configuration management, and work product inspection. Prior to starting work at GTRI in March 2019, she was a part-time Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering in the Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering, Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, at Kennesaw State University. She also taught for more than five years in the Engineering Technology Department at Midlands Technical College in Columbia, SC. Early in her career, she worked for ABB Power T&D as a Senior Consultant at the Electric Systems Technology Institute in Raleigh, NC and then transferred to ABB Electricity Metering as the Director of Quality and Business Processes. Barbara has more than twenty years of combined experience in the areas of mechanical and industrial engineering, quality, and process improvement in both academia and in a variety of manufacturing industries. Barbara has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, a Master’s of Integrated Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, all from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. Barbara is married with two children.
