The Airborne Instrumentation Systems Division designs, develops, fabricates, and integrates technologically-advanced instrumentation and telemetry systems for aircraft, targets, and weapons platforms. The AISD pursuit of AS9100 certification began as a strategic decision to improve safety, quality, cost, and delivery performance to customers through the streamlining of organization-unique requirements, elimination of waste, effective implementation of a Quality Management System. As the complexity of new design and development projects continued to grow, the organization came to the realization that the legacy processes and procedures relied on in the past had to be revamped to increase the capacity of the organization.
AS9100 is unlike other Quality Management Systems because the organization must demonstrate process effectiveness and continual improvement plans at each internal and surveillance audit. The critical elements to the future success of the QMS at AISD are the robust auditing scheme, the Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA), continuous improvement, and the Process Evaluation Matrix/Management Review processes.
